"The Art of Flossie Phillips"
Flossie was born in Virginia, but grew up in San Francisco, moving to the city to live with her aunt in 1931. She attended commercial art school after graduating from George Washington High. After art school, she worked for a San Francisco furniture manufacturer, hand painting products with custom decorative designs.
She continued to pursue her love of painting after moving to the Sacramento area by taking more classes and displaying her work at various venues, including the Crocker Art Museum.
Flossie partnered with two talented local artists, Marge Southern and Veon Zentner, to form BARS (Business Art Rental Services). The three had the then novel idea of making their paintings available to area offices and businesses on a rotating basis for a fee. They discovered that companies welcomed the opportunity to display fresh, local art, and the artists found a new audience for their work.
Flossie was one of the original members of the Sacramento Fine Arts Center and volunteered countless hours here. She loved interacting with talented and creative individuals and formed a close network of fellow artist friends. She is a world traveler and lover of the arts and continues to reside in Carmichael.
